State names names, seeks unpaid sales taxes

November 25th, 2009, 4:26 pm · 9 Comments · posted by Ronald Campbell

Four Orange County businesses have joined the list of the state’s biggest sales tax delinquents.

The state Board of Equalization said 28 new entries appear on its quarterly list of the 250 businesses owing the most in delinquent sales taxes. The 28 newcomers collectively owe $20.2 million. Together the top 250 owe $288 million in sales and use taxes.

Taxpayers who are litigating or appealing their tax bills or who are in bankruptcy are not included.

The new Orange County entrants together owe $2.7 million. They are:

  • Charles Treister, Yorba Linda, $808,435.
  • American Cars and Trucks Enterprises, doing business as Rent-4-Less, Midway City, $711,688.
  • Italgres California Inc., Anaheim, $655,515.
  • McFadden Auto Sales Inc., Santa Ana, $537,866.

It has been a bad couple of years for auto sales, and the list of new sales tax delinquents reflects that. Of the 28 new entrants on the statewide list, 10 have car-related names. Together they account for $7.5 million in unpaid sales taxes.

The Legislature ordered the Board of Equalization to publicize the names of the 250 biggest tax delinquents beginning in 2007. Since then, the board said, 23 of those named have either paid their back taxes in full or begun making installment payments.

A “bad couple of years” explains why business owners fail to remit the sales taxes they have already collected from their customers?

  • Kris says:

I agree. Our family owns a small business and we never think of that money sitting there as ours to do with as we want.

If they are stealing from the state, how much did they steal from you?

Josh, Accounting rule #25, any excuse

What does “It has been a bad couple of years for auto sales, and the list of new sales tax delinquents reflects that: have anything to do with these people not paying their taxes?!

All they had to do was contact the state and file for an extension. I don’t feel bad at all.

Everyone has had a bad couple of years…some are facing a few more bad years but still pay their taxes!

Can you print their phone numbers so we can crank call them and goof on them?

So what is the state doing to collect the taxes? this isn’t income taxes, this is sales taxes which they presumably collected from the buyers when they sold the vehicles. So that would be fraud and seems like embezzlement as well as they didn’t just pay, they took money that was not theirs.

Can’t they attach something to start getting some payment?

$2.7 million just from these, just from OC. That would help some of the programs that have been cut.

Of course employers sometimes do that with money they withheld from checks of employers. I had 2 different employers who withheld money from my check for SS taxes on the last–manual not computer check– that they never reported to the state. They probably figured that the employee wouldn’t complain but would just not report the income. I did and should have reported their fraud but never got around to it.

Start posting lists of stolen SSN names. Start posting lists of businesses who hire illegal aliens.

Put these people in jail. They collected tax revenue and did not forward it to the state. They should be arrested ASAP.
