Former Register publisher to head Oregon paper

October 26th, 2009, 10:20 am · 16 Comments · posted by Mary Ann Milbourn

N. Christian Anderson III, former publisher of The Orange County Register, was named publisher of The Oregonian, the Portland-based newspaper reported today.

nanderson_mdIn joining the Oregonian, Anderson returns to his roots.  He grew up in Heppner, Ore. and graduated from Oregon State University.

Anderson, 59, spent the better part of 27 years at the Orange County Register, beginning in 1980 when he was named editor, the youngest at a metropolitan U.S. paper.

He worked his way up the executive ranks of Irvine-based Freedom Communications Inc., parent of the Register.  In 1994, he became publisher of The Gazette, Freedom’s daily newspaper in Colorado Springs.

He returned to the Register in 1999 as publisher and remained until September 2007, when he left the company.  He currently lives in Coto de Caza.

During Anderson’s tenure at the Register, the newspaper won its first two Pulitzer Prizes in 1985 and 1989.  Editor and Publisher, a newspaper industry magazine, named Anderson publisher of the year in 2007.

  • Republicans ARE Traitors says:

    Unfortunately,
Like the republican party, the register was hyacked by a small group of hypocrites who spew their propaganda for their own benefit. The register is really run by the Lincoln Club, where people like John “Bailout” Campbell, Mike “Talk out of Two sides of his mouth” Shroeder, Susan “Do you know who my husband is” Kang Shroeder, Tony Rackaukus, John Moorlach, Janet “Absolutely Crazy” Nguyen, Chris “there is no way this guy should be employed” Norby and many other local power brokers get to voice their idiot ramblings to the public without anyone challenging them.

Did the register ever challenge John “Bailout” Campbell’s bailout votes (3 in total). How come he didn’t show up for the Obama vote? Yet the Havis Jarvis Taxpayer Association said he is a fiscal conservative. The register didn’t say one word when Campbell destroyed our currency like a Traitor. They didn’t say one thing when these bought and paid for taxpayer associations supported the Fascist Campbell.

Where is the register outrage when Chris Norby was caught stealing tax payer dollars after his divorce? Where is the register outrage when John Moorlach wasted HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of DOLLARS with bogus SIV and CDO “investment” schemes.

    N. Christian Anderson is a failure. The business he ran, failed. He left to Oregon because he is a failure in Orange County.

    So Long, Oregonian!

It does look like the writing is on the wall and the OCR is headed for bankruptsy and failure; I’ll be sorry to see this once great local paper fail and disappear.

I’ll be sorrier still when the Register is remembered for the shoddy, sub-high-school-journalism-quality paper that it is today, rather than the well written, well read, outstanding paper that it once was in the past.

  • Point and Laugh says:

    Why is this News?

Really, this publisher going back to his “roots” new worthy?

I admit, I don’t know him from Joe Blow off the street and he may very well be a great guy but why is this news worthy?

When was the last time you read an article in a newspaper and say “boy, when this publisher leaves town, it’s going to be a sad day for all who reads this paper” come on, really, this is news?

Ata Boy OC Register! you get a “Point and Laugh”

  • thirtyplus says:

I hope he will have the $$$ to hire an editor to look over articles before they are published. Preferably one who can spell and understands English grammar. It appears that the OCR does not have that luxury.

  • Bill Sidebotham says:

He can tank that paper too. Coming soon….The Oregon Post!

  • Bill Sidebotham says:

I still remember sitting in the auditorium, I am a former employee, listening to his pitch for the OC Post. He kept citing the findings of his focus group. No one that I talked to thought it would last. Less than a year later, he jumped ship right before the OC Post came crashing down.
