Bookkeeper agrees to guilty plea in embezzling scheme

The bookkeeper for a small family-owned firm in Orange has agreed to plead pleaded guilty to embezzling $1 million over seven years by depositing funds in a personal account with a name nearly identical to one of the company’s vendors.
Foifua M. Atoafa, 44, entered a plea agreement guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana on Wednesday to three counts of wire fraud for depositing checks into a personal account.
Atoafa, who worked as an accountant and bookkeeper for Tinnell Fibre Inc. from 2001 to 2008, opened the personal account under the name Rincon Recycling, Inc., a name nearly identical to one of Tinnell’s vendors, according to the plea agreement. The plea agreement said Atoafa’s fraudulent activity cost Tinnell, a brokerage for paper recycling, more than $1.7 million.
“For us, it’s real money,” said Bill Tinnell, president and owner of the four-employee firm he founded in 1995.
Tinnell declined to discuss details of the case because he is still in litigation seeking to recover some of his losses.
A federal judge must still approve Atoafa’s plea agreement, under which she could be sentenced to a maximum 60 years in prison and a fine of $750,000.

We are doing fine and have been strengthened by our love for each other and our support from our chirch and friends. We stand by our mother and want her to know that we are very proud of her and know that we would not have asked for a better MOM. She is the greatest person in this world and whatever it is or how difficult it is you will come through this. None of you know her as well as we do, how she has helped a lot of people regardless of who they are. She is always giving her all to everyone and anyone who comes her way. God blessed us by giving us a Mom like her, a grandma like her and the greatest friend you can ever ask for.
If you think for one minute that this has brought the Atoafa’s down, let me reassure you that we are still intact. As a matter of fact it has brought us closer and opened our eyes to the kind of people we surround ourselves with. WOW its amazing how such beautiful things can come of the most horrid things yet only the open minded can see the miracle that has happened. I personally know this family and the woman involved. They have grown emotionally spiritually and mentally because of this situation. Ms. Disgusted on the other hand must be so simple headed that she can’t seem to see the bigger picture, but I’ll stop there because it is not my job to judge you. Eternal perspective is what we are taught and God works in mysterious ways. With the crime being done or not this lady is an amazing lady and I don’t know any who would confess to what she has.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit…like most of the member’s in the Anaheim 8th Ward, yall know something was up. Foifua didn’t do this alone. I know she confided in close family members about what she was doing. She gained their trust and the money laundering continued. Those she helped in financial matters are just as guilty as she was. Those who knew what she was doing yet did nothing to stop her are just as guilty as she is. I know Foifua wasn’t the prettiest person, but people do some crazy things to buy their esteem. She wanted to make sure her kids were flowered with nice apparell, hence the names, Pearl, Ruby, etc. Anyway, the point I want to make is, we let this happened. We could have asked questions. I’m a little concerned that the leadership at the Anaheim 8th ward didn’t see this? The only thing that was hidden from us was Foifua’s psychological disorder. It is required for us to forgive. I’m a father of 2 beautiful children, and I’m married to the most beautiful lady in the world, sealed in the Temple. Religion and Christ has nothing to do with any of this. Is it bad that she got caught or bad that she did such a crime. She probably had good intentions at first, just to help her family out a little and then pay the company back. Although, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Like any other addiction, you take a little at first and then more and then more and before you know it, you are in way to deep and can’t get out. Eventually you get caught, especially when all evidence points to you.
Really the whole situation is sad. Sad for the company that entrusted so much financial access to one employee. Sad for what seems like an otherwise good person that made really horribly bad choices when faced with such temptations. Sad for a family and children who now have to reap the many reprecussions and consequences of that bad choice.
Any human with any compassion, would leave her suffering family alone. This lady has admitted her crime and has to accept her punishment for years to come. I’m sure when she was young she didn’t plan on being an embezzler of such a large amount of money. We all make bad choices and we all will eventually have to face the consequences.
Educate yourselves and commit yourselves to making wise choices and learn from a situation like this so that it doesn’t happen to you or your family. Leave the punishment up to the courts.

I was directed to this comment section by a friend of a friend and I am amazed at the people who are posting on here. Is this what you learn at your church. I do not know what church you people go to (I kind a have an idea) but if this is what goes on in your church I advise you all to look elsewhere.
These people both the Tinnells and the Atoafas need prayer and comfort that they may find a common ground to start rebuilding with their families, their lives and most of all their God Almighty.
If we are reading the same bible, it speaks about forgiveness and mercy. Justice is mine says God not anyones.
I invite these people to sought out the Lord. Come to Christ and know that it does not matter how bad our sin is, it will be sanctified through Christ. Visit our service and we will welcome you with open arms. You are going through a process and you need guidance and support and love and fellowship from people who seek after Christ.
Jesus will never forsake you, Remember that.

I would like to take this time to thank Pastor Revrend Williams for the wonderful prayer. i believe the Tinnell’s and The Atoafa’s would be greatful as well. I am a member of the LDS church and i am embarrassed to say that i know alot of these people who are leaving negative comments on here most of them are LDS members and they hold a temple recommend and they are adults between 30-60 something, some from utah It is not the church that make these people the way they are they just represent us in a bad way and they attend church for the wrong reasons.., but they 2 need alot of praying for.

Well we ARE taught wrong from right, the right choices and the wrong choices, and what comes to those who do make wrong decisions no matter what their reasons are. Obviously what they forgot to remember is that regardless of a persons sins we are taught to forgive and forget. Her sin is her sin and rest only upon her shoulders and our Savior, Jesus Christ. && with charity love and encouragement from her brothers and sisters she can rise from the dust “and though her sins may be as red as crimson they shall be as white as snow”.
What I’ve learned these past years in church I’ve been taught all my life, and I’ve always wondered why we relearn them every Sunday?? I just figured it out, its because there are people who still don’t get it.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit…like most of the member’s in the Anaheim 8th Ward, yall know something was up. Foifua didn’t do this alone. I know she confided in close family members about what she was doing. She gained their trust and the money laundering continued. Those she helped in financial matters are just as guilty as she was. Those who knew what she was doing yet did nothing to stop her are just as guilty as she is. I know Foifua wasn’t the prettiest person, but people do some crazy things to buy their esteem. She wanted to make sure her kids were flowered with nice apparell, hence the names, Pearl, Ruby, etc. Anyway, the point I want to make is, we let this happened. We could have asked questions. I’m a little concerned that the leadership at the Anaheim 8th ward didn’t see this? The only thing that was hidden from us was Foifua’s psychological disorder. It is required for us to forgive. I wish I could have confronted Sis. Foifua. Maybe confessing to the victims before would have mitigated the situation. You never know. Sorry if I offened anyone, I know we could have stopped this. It’s appalling to any ethnic community reading the comments most of you wrote. The vulgar name calling and personal attacks on Foifua’s children and to each other are childish and does not accomplish anything but cause the hatred in ones heart to consume their every being.
I believe what’s lacking here is prayer. How can we help the victim who has been betrayed by a once trusted employee? By praying for him and his family who has suffered a tremendous loss (1.7 millions worth). How can we help the perpetrator and her family? By praying that she will repent and that her family may get through this in one piece.

As aforementioned, Religion should have nothing to do with this case. Just because this lady may have membership in a certain church is not relavant to the fact that she did a major crime. People of all types of religions and aethiests alike, commit horrendous, horrific crimes (worse than embezzlement) everyday and their religious beliefs are not belittled, demeaned or dragged through the mud.

I have read everything and I see that my daughters have been here, my wife has been here and a lot of my family members and friends have also been here. It is a shame and sad what has been going on and the things has been said.
First thing is the church and then my ward Anaheim 8th. I may not attend the ward anymore but my heart is still there. My youth the boys that I taught I love them dearly and the people that I worked with I miss you guys and I love you all. What is going on with my family please do not put the church in it. The church and its teachings are precious. Its principles and ordinances are sacred and its buildings are dedicated holy grounds that you can not discredit or make light of its value. The leaders of the ward or any other ward were ordained to hold such callings and you must not speak or degrade them in any shape or form.
What is happening to my family we are dealing with it. We are overcomed with the support from people we know and love. We have people walking infront of us, behind us, next to us and some are even carrying us and for that I as the Patriach of this family thank you from the bottom of my heart. Our friends that are on here defending or supporting us thank you but my only request is this, if you are going to be negative and use foul language and all that bad stuff please stop. I know where your heart is, I know why you do it but know this that you can not fight fire we fire. Sometimes silence is the best thing. Because they say what they say does not mean we lower our selves to their level and do the same thing. Our children and wives are reading this and it breaks my heart that such language is used and then directed to the church. Again thank you for your love but lets just stop here and let them say their piece. I know my wife does not live by this principle at all but if you guys can TURN THE OTHER CHEEK.

You dont know that, I dont know that noone knows that, but to bring this out for what? The children, everyone has children, some good some bad so why put this on the parents. They did not make the choices for them. We already have one family in here and now we bring another. To hate someone this much takes a lot of building. Each party continues to add and bringing in more people, more family members more friends and soon we will escalate to a place of no return. I read comments from two kinds of fathers. One that fights tooth and nail using hate to defend his family and one the chooses to speak from the heart and in his own words turn the other cheek. Who do you think is going to come out ahead. They both love their families, they both want the best for them and they both are hurting. They need to heal, so if you are a friend, sister, cousin, brother or anything to these people, I urge you to help them heal. Do not come in here and add fuel to the fire. I don’ buy it for one minute. We train our people to recognise redflags on accounting discrepancies and I just don’t buy this for one minute. Where are the financials and who does them. This scheme is not new to the accounting industry and for the 15 yrs I have been doing this I have never come across anyone that can carry this for this long. 2-3 months or maybe 6 months at the most. If this woman was doing it all, what company would give one person this much control over their finance? From a business stand point it is idiotic at the least. The word should be suicidal.
For 7 years financials were done and I am pretty sure there were accountants involved. Any company must and always close books and do financials a least once a month. Profit and Losst statements, balance sheets, bank statements and reconciliations. Audits were done and taxes were filed. RED FLAGS SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THE REPORTS. Follow the money and my money is on the accountant or someone higher up in the food chain. The glove does not fit. My opinion is she took the plea agreement too fast and too early but then again I am not an attorney, just an accountant. Everything is matter of public record.
I would like to meet the woman who is in the middle of all this because she can help me rewrite the text book on auditing.

Hello all, i actually don’t know Foifua Atoafa personally, but happened to hear about her case and thought i would look up her name. I am 100% Samoan and am very proud of it. The reason why i say that is because i am amazed at how we as a people “The happy people” can come on here and bash this woman as if she committed a crime worse than Hitler himself. What do we gain from slandering a person who is as Human as anyone of us? Yes she committed a sin, we all do daily but GOD FORGIVES. The bible clearly states “Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?” God will reign supreme in this situation no matter what anyone has to say. If we actually prayed for her rather than thinking of what other evil things we can speak about her, then maybe God will bless you as well. I have no claims to either parties. We are only interested in the complexity of the case. Madoff is also a great case to follow and we are. This case however aims directly at the everyday middle American Companies which we cater too. I can no longer comment on this case anymore however I am still interested in your input.
